In 2010, Congress passed the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, often known as the Affordable Care Act or “Obamacare.” The ACA contained many new provisions to protect American consumers and cover a wider range of health services, making it easier to seek treatment for substance use disorders and have at least some of the costs covered by an insurance provider.

Before the ACA went into effect, many insurance companies refused to cover the broad range of services necessary to treat substance abuse effectively. These services include inpatient treatment, outpatient addiction treatment, supervised medical detox, supportive medications and services designed to help people with substance use disorders continue recovering long after they’ve completed formal treatment programs. In an article published in the American Journal of Public Health, researchers claim the ACA has “dramatically changed that picture” by requiring insurance companies to cover substance abuse treatment.

Now that health insurance providers are required to cover treatment for substance abuse, drug rehab and alcohol rehab are much more affordable for Americans with traditional insurance coverage. Aetna, one of the largest insurance providers in the United States, is just one of the companies now offering treatment for drug or alcohol addiction. Keep reading to learn more about how Aetna addiction treatment coverage can help you access the comprehensive care available at Virtue Recovery Center.

Aetna Health Insurance Overview

In addition to employer-sponsored coverage, Aetna sells individual and family policies, Medicare Advantage plans and Medicaid plans in states that use a managed-care model for their Medicaid programs.

If you have Aetna coverage, you may receive SBIRT, which stands for screening, brief intervention and referral to treatment. SBIRT is an evidence-based approach to helping people who struggle with substance addiction and are at risk for poor health outcomes due to their substance use. It’s often used during primary care physician visits, meaning you may be able to avoid some of the most severe consequences of alcohol or drug use.

During SBIRT, your doctor may decide that you’d benefit from addiction treatment services, such as residential drug rehab or an outpatient program for alcohol use. If you need these services, your Aetna insurance may cover all or part of the cost.

Aetna Insurance Coverage for Addiction Treatment

As a national insurance provider, Aetna offers dozens of plans, all of which have different levels of coverage. That’s why it’s essential to have us verify your insurance benefits before you enroll in treatment. If you provide information on your specific Aetna insurance plan, one of our admissions counselors can determine what the plan covers and estimate how much you’ll pay out of pocket for your stay at our residential treatment center.

Covered Addiction Treatment Services

Aetna offers many types of insurance plans, all of which have different premiums, deductibles, co-pays and coinsurance requirements. Therefore, one plan may provide better coverage for alcohol and drug rehab than another plan.

Depending on the terms of your plan, your Aetna benefits may cover the following substance abuse treatments.

Medical Detox

When you first arrive at a treatment center, you may need supervised medical detox before you move to inpatient rehab or a residential rehabilitation program. The purpose of medical detox is to eliminate alcohol and drugs from your body under the supervision of trained medical professionals who can help you manage your withdrawal symptoms. Aetna may cover medical detox to reduce the risk of complications during the withdrawal process.

Residential Rehabilitation

Residential drug and alcohol rehab programs are a little different from inpatient treatment programs. An inpatient program is usually delivered in a secure hospital unit, meaning it has a clinical environment without much in the way of amenities. In contrast, a residential rehab program is delivered in an environment that’s similar to a private home.

At Virtue Recovery Center, we have clinical and medical staff members on duty 24 hours per day, seven days per week, to ensure you have the support you need to keep your recovery on track. You’ll stay in a comfortable room, eat gourmet meals and use several types of therapy to improve your coping skills and learn how to live a life free of alcohol and drugs. Depending on the terms of your Aetna insurance policy, your plan may cover several weeks of therapy and other services at one of our addiction treatment centers.

Outpatient Services

In many cases, Aetna also covers several types of outpatient treatment, including outpatient rehab, case management and services designed to help you make a successful transition into the community without putting your recovery at risk. Again, the coverage available depends on the terms of your Aetna plan.

Virtue Recovery Center offers a wide range of outpatient services to ensure you have the right amount of support as you return to work and start spending more time with family and friends, such as medication management, individual therapy, group therapy, referrals to outpatient treatment providers and services to help you resolve any legal issues that arose while you were using drugs or alcohol.
