Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

What is Rehab Insurance Coverage?

Rehab insurance coverage is a type of health insurance that offers benefits to those seeking medical help for a wide range of issues ranging from substance abuse to mental health concerns. Many types of medical care can be covered by rehab insurances.  Programs like detoxification, behavioral therapy, medication-assisted treatment, inpatient and outpatient therapies, and others may be covered by your current health insurance plan.

The level of coverage for rehab is dependent on many factors and may vary depending on the exact details of your policy, the benefits provided, and the specific treatment requirements. Rehab insurance coverage is available through employer-sponsored plans, government-sponsored plans like Medicaid, commercial health insurance policies, and combinations.

How To Get My Insurance To Pay For Rehab Treatment

You will need to follow the below steps for insurance to pay for rehab treatment:

  1. Check your plan: Review your insurance policy carefully to see which rehabilitation services are covered and possible out-of-pocket costs.
  2. Choose a rehab facility: Choose a rehab facility that accepts Aetna insurance and meets your individual treatment needs. Aetna substance abuse treatment coverage insurance is accepted at all of our multiple treatment centers.
  3. Get a referral: Depending on your plan, receiving reimbursement for rehab therapy might require a referral from your primary care doctor or a mental health professional. Make sure to adhere to the referral procedure specified by your plan, if applicable.
  4. Pre-authorization: Depending on your plan, you may need pre-authorization for rehab treatment. This means you must provide Aetna with information about your diagnosis, treatment plan, and estimated length of stay. They can then determine if the treatment is medically necessary.
  5. Submit Claims: Verify with your chosen treatment center that claims are submitted to Aetna on your behalf.
  6. Follow-up: After your rehab treatment is complete, follow up with your Aetna plan to ensure that all claims have been processed and that you have received any reimbursements or coverage owed to you.
How Many Times Will Insurance Pay For Rehab?

The number of times insurance will cover rehab depends on several variables, including the kind of rehab program, the policy’s particular conditions, and the patient’s medical requirements. As long as rehab is deemed medically necessary, which implies that treatment is required to address a specific condition or illness, insurance normally covers it.

In addition, your insurance may require periodic reviews to determine ongoing medical necessity and coverage. Aetna insurance may also have limitations on how long of a rehab program they will cover. Again, the specific limitations will depend on the terms of your policy, the type of rehab program you are attending, and your individual medical needs. Aetna, however, may cover rehab multiple times.

Does Insurance Cover Outpatient Rehab?

Yes, health insurance generally covers outpatient rehab for substance abuse, but the level of coverage can vary depending on the specific insurance plan you have. Coverage details, such as the extent of services provided and any potential out-of-pocket costs, can differ based on the plan’s terms and conditions.

Outpatient rehab services typically include therapies like counseling sessions, group therapy, educational sessions on substance abuse, and support for maintaining sobriety. To understand the specifics of your coverage for outpatient rehab, it’s essential to review your insurance policy details or contact your provider directly. They can provide the most accurate and personalized information regarding your eligibility for outpatient rehab services, coverage extent, and any prerequisites or conditions you need to meet.

Does Insurance Cover Therapy?

Yes, health insurance typically covers therapy, including mental health and behavioral therapy, as part of its behavioral health coverage. The extent and type of therapy covered can vary based on your specific Aetna plan. Coverage often includes individual therapy, group therapy, family counseling, and sometimes specialized therapies, depending on the individual’s needs and the plan’s provisions.

However, details such as the number of covered sessions, copays, deductibles, and whether you need a referral or preauthorization, can differ from one plan to another. It’s also important to ensure that the therapist or counselor is within Aetna’s network to maximize your benefits.

To get the most accurate information, it’s best to review your policy details or contact Aetna directly. They can provide specifics about what types of therapy are covered, any associated costs you might be responsible for, and how to find in-network therapists.

Can You Go To Rehab Without Insurance?

Yes, you can go to rehab treatment without insurance. The following are some available alternatives if you don’t have insurance or if your insurance doesn’t cover addiction treatment:

  • Pay for therapy out-of-pocket: Many treatment centers provide financing alternatives or sliding scale costs based on income.
  • Community-based groups, nonprofits, or government-funded programs: These programs are usually inexpensive or free and can include a variety of treatments, such as therapy and detoxification. To locate low-cost substance use disorder treatment and services, simply do an Internet search for your state, county, or city.
  • Employee Assistance Programs (EAPs): If employed, your company may have an EAP offering addiction treatment services. EAPs are typically designed to provide support and resources for employees struggling with personal or work-related issues.
  • Faith-based programs: Some faith-based organizations offer treatment services to individuals seeking help with their addiction. These programs may incorporate religious or spiritual practices into their treatment approach.

While these choices may allow you access to addiction treatment without insurance, it’s important to remember that service accessibility and level of care might differ significantly. Therefore, it’s essential to conduct your research, consult with medical specialists, and look for accredited treatment providers to ensure you get the best possible care.

Furthermore, the cost of addiction rehab shouldn’t prevent you from receiving rehabilitation services or other suitable treatments. If you or a loved one is thinking about receiving treatment for a drug or alcohol addiction, Virtue Recovery Center wants to make sure you or they have the best coverage possible. We’ll collaborate with you to develop a cost-effective payment strategy for unexpected expenses.

I can honestly say that this place helped me with my SUD and changed my way of thinking. The staff are all so open and friendly and someone is always there to lend an ear or a helping hand. If you need help, or someone you love needs help, then don’t waste time or money trying anywhere else.

I hit a rough patch heading into the holidays and relapsed, so I went back to Virtue for help. I had gone to the facility in Vegas a while back, but for insurance reasons I had to go to Killeen. Yes! Virtue is that good of a facility it’s worth traveling to, Killeen provided transportation to and from Austin airport. Really the only thing different between the two facilities was the location. Killeen is definitely a 5-star treatment center, very clean with beautiful room and comfortable beds. The staff was amazing from housekeeping to the director! Their program is great with a nice mix of classes and free time, with plenty of activities to do. The food is really good too, provided by in house executive chefs! Just another shoutout to the staff, very caring, genuine and loving what they do! I had forgotten a couple of things when I had packed, and a staff member went personally to the store and picked up what I needed. You cannot go wrong by picking Virtue for your treatment! oh… also ask about “Tyrone Bingo” it’s a wonderful night of entertainment!! Big hearted thank you to all the staff, you’re all a blessing!! followed with the “Serenity Prayer.”

Virtue is a special place. As soon as you arrive you are accepted as if you are family. The staff is beyond amazing. They are the definition of ride or die. They will go to the ends of the earth to make sure you have everything you need to be successful on your road to recovery. If you want a better life call them now, check in, and wait it out, because patience is a Virtue!!!!!!!

I cannot say enough good things about Virtue. This place helped me completely turn my life around. The staff are an amazing group of people who are what really makes this recovery center what it is. The compassion and real love they share with each and everyone who comes through the door on their road to recovery is astounding. If I listed off all the names of the staff who actually care wholeheartedly about each individual I would need a copy of the payroll list they are all so amazing. Thank you all so much for everything.

Do Drug and Alcohol Rehab Centers Take Insurance?

Do Drug and Alcohol Rehab Centers Take Insurance?

The expense of professional rehabilitation therapy is one of the primary reasons people struggling with substance abuse remain untreated. Fortunately, health insurance generally covers rehab and many types of mental health treatment. However, the amount that your insurance pays depends on many variables, such as your specific policy, the provider, and your individual requirements.

What is Rehab Insurance Coverage?

What is Rehab Insurance Coverage?

Rehab insurance coverage refers to how much a health insurance plan covers rehabilitation services, such as addiction treatment and other forms of therapy or counseling. The coverage can vary depending on the type of insurance plan and the specific rehabilitation services needed.

Rehabilitation services can be costly, especially if required for an extended period. Coverage can help insured individuals manage these costs and get the care they need to recover from illness, injury, or addiction.

Does Private Health Insurance Cover Drug and Alcohol Rehab?

Does Private Health Insurance Cover Drug and Alcohol Rehab?

Yes, private health insurance can cover drug and alcohol rehab. The Affordable Care Act (ACA) mandates that insurance companies cover substance use disorder treatment as an essential health benefit. As a result, most health insurance policies must include some kind of drug and alcohol rehab.[i]

However, the extent of the coverage for substance abuse and alcoholism can vary greatly depending on the type of plan, provider network, and level of care needed, among other factors. For example, some insurance plans may have exclusions and only cover outpatient care. Others may cover inpatient care or residential treatment.

It's important to review your insurance plan to understand what is covered and what your out-of-pocket expenses may be. In some cases, there may be deductibles, copayments, or other cost-sharing requirements that you will need to consider. Additionally, some rehab facilities may not accept certain insurance plans, so verifying that your preferred treatment facility is in-network with your insurance plan is important. Furthermore, you may opt to purchase an umbrella policy, a form of personal liability insurance that can pay claims exceeding the limits of your primary insurance policy.

Does Insurance Cover Mental Health Rehab?

Insurance may cover mental health rehab. The extent of the coverage depends on factors such as your insurance plan and the treatment needed. The Mental Health Parity and Addiction Equity Act (MHPAEA) requires insurance plans to provide equal coverage for mental health and substance use disorder treatment compared to physical health treatment, making mental health rehab an essential health benefit. All types of programs, including those offered by employers, obtained via health care exchanges, and obtained through Medicaid and CHIP, are covered by these parity rules, according to the American Psychological Association.[1]

How Much Does Rehab Cost With Insurance?

The cost of rehab with insurance can vary according to several factors, including the specifics of your insurance plan, your location, and the treatment program you choose. However, as a rough estimate, the average cost of outpatient drug rehab with insurance is between $1,000 to $5,000 for a 30-day program.

Inpatient treatment, which requires staying at a treatment center for an extended period, tends to be more expensive than outpatient treatment, which allows you to live at home while receiving treatment. A general estimate of the typical monthly cost of inpatient rehab with insurance is $5,000 to $25,000 or more, depending on the above variables.[2]

Although the level of coverage might vary, most insurance plans will often pay for substance abuse rehabilitation services. While some insurance plans could cover the entire cost, others may charge a copay or require you to meet a deductible.

How To Get My Insurance To Pay For Rehab Treatment

Getting your insurance to pay for rehab treatment involves several steps. Here are some general steps you can follow:

  1. Verify your insurance coverage: It’s important to know what services are covered, what your deductible is, and what your out-of-pocket expenses might be.
  2. Choose a rehab center that accepts your insurance: Find rehab centers that take insurance. For example, Virtue Recovery Center treatment facilities are in-network with most major insurance plans.
  3. Obtain pre-authorization: Many insurance plans require pre-authorization before covering addiction treatment. This means you'll need to get approval from your insurance provider before beginning treatment. Virtue Recovery Center can help you with this process.
  4. Follow the treatment plan: Once you've obtained pre-authorization, follow the treatment plan recommended by your healthcare provider. This may include attending counseling sessions, participating in support groups, taking medication, and any aftercare services for relapse prevention.
  5. Monitor your coverage: Keep track of your insurance coverage during treatment to ensure that your insurance company pays for the services they've agreed to cover. Contact your insurance provider or rehab center immediately if you notice any discrepancies or problems with your claims.

The process of how to get insurance to pay for inpatient rehab or related treatment can be complex and depend on your insurance provider and particular plan. Therefore, staying informed and advocating for yourself is essential to ensure you receive the coverage you need.

How Many Times Will Insurance Pay For Rehab?

How many times insurance will pay for rehab and how long does insurance pay for inpatient rehab depends on your plan and the specific program you seek. Many insurance plans have a maximum lifetime benefit for substance abuse treatment, which means they will only cover a certain number of treatment episodes or a specific dollar amount over your lifetime.

However, some plans may cover multiple rounds of treatment if deemed medically necessary. It's important to verify these details with your insurance provider to understand the specifics of your plan and what benefits are available to you.

Your treatment progress may also affect how often your insurance covers rehab. For instance, your insurer may be more likely to pay for further treatment if you successfully finish a treatment program but then relapse. Ultimately, depending on personal circumstances and insurance policies, the frequency with which insurance will cover rehab might vary considerably.

Can You Go To Rehab Without Insurance?

Yes, you can go to rehab treatment without insurance. The following are some available alternatives if you don't have insurance or if your insurance doesn't cover addiction treatment:

While these choices may allow you access to addiction treatment without insurance, it's important to remember that service accessibility and level of care might differ significantly. Therefore, it's essential to conduct your research, consult with medical specialists, and look for accredited treatment providers to ensure you get the best possible care.

Furthermore, the cost of addiction rehab shouldn't prevent you from receiving rehabilitation services or other suitable treatments. If you or a loved one is thinking about receiving treatment for a drug or alcohol addiction, Virtue Recovery Center wants to make sure you or they have the best coverage possible.
