What Is an Unspecified Feeding or Eating Disorder (UFED)?

UFED — Unspecified Feeding or Eating Disorder — is a clinical diagnosis used when someone has significant disordered eating patterns that don’t fully match traditional categories like anorexia, bulimia, or binge eating disorder. These symptoms are still serious and can impact physical health, emotional wellbeing, and daily life.

Common signs may include:

  • Irregular eating habits
  • Intense anxiety around food or weight
  • Avoidance of meals
  • Disordered thoughts about body image
  • Compensatory behaviors like purging or restriction

At Virtue Recovery Center, we recognize that just because your diagnosis is “unspecified” doesn’t mean your struggle is undefined. You deserve support — and recovery is possible.

General Eating Disorder Statistics

  • An estimated 9% of the U.S. population, or 28.8 million Americans, will have an eating disorder in their lifetime.
  • 15% of women will suffer from an eating disorder by their 40s or 50s, but only 27% receive any treatment for it.
  • Fewer than 6% of people with eating disorders are medically diagnosed as “underweight.” People in larger bodies are at the highest risk of having developed an eating disorder in their lives, and among people in larger bodies, the higher the BMI, the higher the risk.
  • In a sample from an American emergency room, 16% of adult patients screened positive for an eating disorder.
  • Anorexia nervosa has the highest case mortality rate and second-highest crude mortality rate of any mental illness.
  • 10,200 deaths each year are the direct result of an eating disorder — that’s one death every 52 minutes.
  • Eating disorder sufferers with the highest symptom severity are 11 times more likely to attempt suicide than their peers without eating disorder symptoms, and even those with sub-threshold symptoms are 2 times more likely.
  • The economic cost of eating disorders is $64.7 billion every year.
  • Over 3.3 million healthy life years worldwide are lost yearly because of eating disorders.
  • Eating disorder claims in the United States rose 65% as a percentage of all medical claims from 2018 to 2022.
  • The proportion of people with eating disorders who were hospitalized doubled during the COVID-19 pandemic.
  • Over 70% of people with eating disorders also have other conditions, most commonly anxiety and mood disorders.
  • Only 1 in 10 individuals with an eating disorder receive treatment.

How Is UFED Treated When It Co-Occurs With Substance Use Disorder?

At Virtue Recovery Center, we are the only facility in Nevada that treats eating disorders and addiction simultaneously in one integrated program. Our dual diagnosis approach recognizes that many individuals struggling with UFED also face co-occurring substance use disorders, and that treating both conditions together leads to significantly better outcomes.

Can UFED develop into anorexia or bulimia? In many cases, UFED evolves into a more defined disorder if early intervention isn’t provided.

What treatments are used at Virtue Recovery Center? We use a holistic blend of therapy, medical care, nutritional counseling, and trauma support.

Do you accept insurance? Yes, we work with most insurance plans and provide free verification.

Where is treatment located? Our UFED treatment program is located in Las Vegas, Nevada, with residential and outpatient options.

Glossary of Key Terms in UFED Treatment

UFED — Unspecified Feeding or Eating Disorder (UFED) is a diagnosis given when someone shows serious eating disorder symptoms that don’t meet the exact criteria for another condition. It is just as valid and serious as other eating disorders.

Diagnostic Criteria — Diagnostic criteria are the official guidelines used by clinicians to determine if someone meets the standard definition of a disorder. UFED applies when symptoms cause significant distress but don’t fully match another diagnosis.

Subclinical Symptoms — Subclinical symptoms are signs of an eating disorder that fall below the full threshold needed for a diagnosis like anorexia or bulimia. Even at this level, the symptoms can be harmful and require treatment.

Clinical Significance — Clinical significance means that symptoms are severe enough to impact health, daily functioning, or emotional wellbeing. In UFED, behaviors may not meet a specific category but are still clinically significant.

OSFED vs. UFEDOSFED (Other Specified Feeding or Eating Disorder) is used when symptoms are present but don’t fit neatly into one category, and the clinician specifies the reason. UFED is used when the clinician does not provide further specification.

Eating Disorder Spectrum — The eating disorder spectrum refers to the wide range of disordered eating behaviors and thoughts, from mild to severe. UFED is part of this spectrum and can shift into another diagnosis over time if untreated.

Restrictive Behaviors — Restrictive behaviors include skipping meals, cutting out food groups, or eating very little overall. These behaviors may appear in UFED without reaching the full severity of anorexia nervosa.

Compensatory Behaviors — Compensatory behaviors are actions taken to offset food intake, such as purging, fasting, or excessive exercise. In UFED, these may occur but not frequently enough to meet another eating disorder’s diagnostic threshold.

Co-Occurring Disorders — Many people with UFED also experience conditions such as depression, anxiety, or trauma. Addressing co-occurring disorders is crucial for effective treatment and recovery.

Relapse Prevention — Relapse prevention focuses on helping clients maintain progress, recognize early warning signs, and avoid returning to harmful eating patterns. For UFED, this is especially important since symptoms may shift or evolve over time.
