Below, discover some of the alternatives on how to pay for inpatient rehab without insurance.

We Work With Most Insurances

What is An Inpatient Rehab Center?

An inpatient rehab center is a healthcare facility where individuals with substance abuse or addiction problems receive intensive, 24-hour care and treatment. Inpatient treatment facilities give patients a disciplined and encouraging atmosphere to concentrate on their recovery and address any underlying issues that may have contributed to their disorder.

Inpatient rehab centers typically offer various services, including medical detoxification, individual and group therapy sessions, medication management, and relapse prevention education. The length of stay at an inpatient rehab center can vary depending on the severity of the addiction, the individual's needs, and the treatment plan.

Inpatient rehab centers may be part of a larger hospital, healthcare system, or standalone facilities specifically designed for addiction treatment. In either case, they are staffed by trained healthcare professionals, including physicians, nurses, therapists, and addiction specialists, who work together to provide comprehensive patient care.

What is Rehab Insurance Coverage?

Rehab insurance coverage refers to how much an individual's health insurance policy will cover the cost of rehabilitation services for substance abuse, addiction, or mental health treatment. Depending on the individual's insurance plan and the specific treatment program, rehab insurance coverage can vary widely.

Many health insurance plans provide some coverage for addiction and mental health treatment. However, the level of coverage can vary based on factors such as the specific insurance plan, the type of treatment, and the location of the treatment center.

Some insurance plans may cover the total cost of inpatient or outpatient rehab treatment, while others may only cover a portion. Some plans may also limit the length of stay in a rehab facility or the number of therapy sessions covered.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

How Much Does Rehab Cost Without Insurance?

The cost of rehab can vary widely depending on a variety of factors, including the type and length of treatment, the location of the treatment facility, and the level of care needed. As a result, the cost of rehab can range from several thousand dollars to tens of thousands of dollars.

On average, 30-day inpatient rehab without insurance can range from $5,000 to $20,000, a 60- to 90-day program can range from $12,000 to $60,000, and some rehab facilities charge an entry fee of around $3,000 – $4,000. Rehabilitation services typically cost $13,475 per person.1

How to Get Into Rehab With No Insurance?

How can you enter rehab if you don’t have rehab insurance coverage? Many families struggle with this subject. Fortunately, even if you don’t have insurance coverage for rehabilitation services, there are alternatives to finance your recovery or the recovery of someone you care about. Continue reading for available options for rehab without insurance or if your insurance doesn’t cover treatment.

Financing Rehab Treatment

In most cases, personal loans for rehab are the best choice for people who want quick medical attention but lack the resources to pay for it out of pocket. You can acquire the whole amount you need for treatment by receiving rehabilitation financing. It transfers this sum straight from the bank to the rehab program and offers a repayment schedule tailored to your budget once you finish treatment.

Sliding Scale Fees

Sliding scale fees are a payment option that some rehab facilities offer to make treatment more accessible for those who are uninsured or underinsured. With a sliding scale fee, the cost is based on your income and ability to pay rather than a fixed price. This means that those with lower incomes or limited resources may be able to pay less for treatment than those with higher incomes or more resources.

For example, if a person’s income falls below a certain threshold, they may qualify for a lower fee. In addition, the sliding scale fee can be adjusted based on your financial situation, making it a more affordable option for those who cannot afford the total cost of treatment.

Employee Assistance Programs (EAPs)
Faith-Based Programs

Faith-based organizations are religious groups or institutions that offer addiction treatment and rehab services based on their religious beliefs and values. These organizations may use a variety of approaches to treatment, including traditional counseling, group therapy, and spiritual support.

In addition, faith-based rehab programs also provide an alternative to traditional medical models of addiction treatment, which may not resonate with everyone. They typically focus on providing a holistic approach to treatment, addressing addiction’s spiritual, emotional, and physical aspects. In addition, these programs often incorporate prayer, meditation, and other religious practices as part of the recovery process.

An advantage of faith-based rehab programs is the sense of community and support they offer. You may find comfort and strength in connecting with others who share your beliefs and values.

Community-Based Groups

Community clinics are healthcare facilities that provide primary and preventative care services to those in a specific geographical area or community. These clinics can also offer addiction treatment and rehab services to individuals struggling with substance abuse.

Community clinics may offer various services, including outpatient counseling, medication-assisted treatment (MAT), group therapy, and case management. These services may be provided by licensed therapists, social workers, and other healthcare professionals trained in addiction treatment.

One advantage of seeking addiction treatment through community clinics is that they’re often more accessible and affordable than traditional rehab centers. In addition, community clinics may offer sliding scale fees or accept Medicaid and other government-funded insurance programs, making addiction treatment more accessible to low-income individuals and families.

Grants & Scholarships For Rehab Treatment

Grants and scholarships can be valuable for substance abuse treatment funding. The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) offers a variety of grant programs for addiction treatment, including grants from state and local governments, tribal communities, and non-profit organizations offering rehab funding. These grants can be used to fund a range of services, including prevention, treatment, and recovery support.[i]

Subsidized Coverage

Subsidized coverage for rehab refers to government-funded or partially funded insurance programs that provide coverage for addiction treatment services. An example of a subsidized coverage program is Medicaid, a government-funded insurance program that offers a range of addiction treatment services for low-income individuals and families.

The specific services covered may vary by state, so check with your state’s Medicaid program to determine eligibility and coverage.

Raising Funds For Recovery Treatment

Crowdfunding for rehab can be a viable option for individuals who need to pay for rehab but don’t have insurance or other means of funding available. Crowdfunding involves raising funds through an online platform, such as GoFundMe or Kickstarter, where people can donate or contribute to a specific cause or project.

To crowdfund for rehab, you can create a fundraising campaign on a crowdfunding platform and share it with your social network and community. You can explain your situation and why you need funding for rehab and set a fundraising goal. You can also share updates on your progress and express your gratitude to donors throughout the campaign.

When creating a crowdfunding campaign for rehab, being transparent and honest about your situation is essential. You should clearly explain why you need funding and how it will be used to support your recovery.

Financial Help From Friends & Family

Asking friends and family for financial help to pay for addiction treatment can be a challenging but necessary step for some individuals who don’t know how to pay for rehab without insurance. While it can be hard to ask for help, it’s important to remember that addiction is a disease, and seeking treatment is a courageous and important step toward recovery.

When asking friends and family for financial help, be honest and upfront about your situation. Explain why you need help and how it will be used to support your recovery. Be prepared to provide details about the cost of treatment, including any out-of-pocket expenses, deductibles, or copays.

It’s also important to respect your loved ones’ financial situations and be prepared to accept any decision they make. While some family members or friends may be willing and able to help financially, others may not have the resources to contribute.

Is It Worth Paying For Rehab If You Don’t Have Insurance?

The short answer is yes. We know that paying for rehab without insurance can be difficult, often involving a significant financial commitment. However, for individuals struggling with addiction, seeking professional treatment can be a critical step towards recovery and an overall healthier, happier life.

Seeking professional treatment can help reduce the risk of relapse and the associated costs of continued substance abuse. Untreated substance use disorder can have significant long-term physical, emotional, and financial consequences in the short and long term. Here are a few examples:

  • Medical Costs: Substance use disorder and addiction can lead to various health problems, including liver disease, heart disease, respiratory problems, and mental health issues. Treating these health problems, including hospitalization, medication, and ongoing medical care, can be expensive.
  • Legal Costs: Substance abuse can lead to legal problems, such as arrests, fines, and legal fees. These costs can add up quickly and have long-term consequences, including a criminal record that can impact employment opportunities and financial stability.
  • Lost Income: Substance abuse can lead to lost productivity and missed workdays, impacting income, job stability, and financial stability.
  • Relationship Costs: Substance abuse can strain personal relationships, leading to divorce, separation, or loss of social support. This can impact mental health and financial stability, including the need to pay for child support or alimony.
  • Cost of Substance Abuse: Purchasing drugs or alcohol can add up quickly, especially if the addiction progresses. This can lead to financial difficulties, including the inability to pay bills, maintain housing, or meet basic needs.

An Institute of Medicine research study indicated that the annual cost of outpatient treatment for cocaine or heroin was around $3,100 per individual. The cost of residential cocaine treatment was around $12,500. However, untreated addictions were projected to cost $43,200 per year per individual, primarily because of legal expenses and incarceration.1

It’s estimated that substance abuse costs society $442 billion annually in health care, lost productivity, and legal expenses.2

Are There Free Rehab Treatment Available?

Yes, free rehab treatment programs are available for individuals who cannot afford to pay for addiction treatment. These programs can offer various services, including detoxification, counseling, and aftercare. Some examples of free rehab treatment programs include government-funded programs, non-profit organizations, community organizations, and faith-based groups.

Addiction Treatment With Medicare

Medicare is a federal health insurance program that primarily covers people who are 65 years of age or older and those with certain disabilities or chronic health conditions. Medicare may be able to help with addiction treatment costs for eligible individuals.

Medicare has several parts that cover a range of addiction treatment services, including inpatient hospital stays, outpatient treatment, and prescription medications:3

  • Medicare Part A: covers inpatient hospital stays for detoxification and addiction treatment.
  • Medicare Part B: covers outpatient services, such as counseling, therapy, and other behavioral health services.
  • Medicare Part D: covers prescription medications used for addiction treatment, such as methadone and buprenorphine.
Addiction Treatment With Medicaid

Medicaid is a joint federal and state program that provides health coverage to low-income individuals and families. Medicaid may be able to help with addiction treatment costs for eligible individuals, offering a range of addiction treatment services, including inpatient hospital stays, outpatient treatment, and prescription medications.

Medicaid coverage for addiction treatment may vary by state, but all states must cover certain basic services. Some states also provide additional services or expand coverage to include additional treatment options.

To be eligible for Medicaid, you must meet certain income and other eligibility requirements, which vary by state. Eligibility requirements may include income, household size, and other factors. If you are eligible for Medicaid, you may be able to receive coverage for addiction treatment services.4

Addiction Recovery Support Groups

Support groups can be valuable for addiction recovery, providing a sense of community, accountability, education, hope, and ongoing support. They provide a community of people who understand the challenges of addiction and can offer encouragement, accountability, and guidance. Some common types of support groups for addiction recovery include Alcoholics Anonymous (AA),5 Narcotics Anonymous (NA), and SMART Recovery.

Here are some ways in which support groups can help with addiction recovery:

  • Connection: Support groups provide a sense of community and connection, which can be important when struggling with addiction, helping to reduce feelings of isolation and loneliness. They can also provide a safe and supportive environment to share experiences and challenges.
  • Accountability: Support groups often involve regular meetings or check-ins, which can help you stay accountable to your recovery goals. This can be especially helpful during times of stress or temptation, when it may be difficult to keep on track.
  • Education: Support groups can provide education and resources on addiction and recovery, which can help you understand your condition better and develop coping strategies.
  • Hope: Support groups can provide hope when you feel hopeless or helpless in the face of addiction. Hearing stories of success and recovery from others who have faced similar challenges can be a powerful motivator during recovery.
  • Continued support: Support groups can provide ongoing support during recovery, even after you’ve completed formal addiction treatment. This can be important for maintaining sobriety and preventing relapse over the long term.
How to Find Addiction Treatment Near Me without Insurance?

Finding addiction and substance abuse treatment without insurance can be challenging, but resources are available to help you locate affordable or free treatment options in your area. Here are some steps you can take to find addiction treatment near you:

  • Contact your state’s Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) hotline.6 This national helpline can provide information on local addiction treatment resources, including low-cost or free options. The number is 1-800-662-HELP (4357).
  • Check with local community health clinics. Many community clinics offer low-cost or free addiction treatment services, including counseling, therapy, and medication-assisted treatment.
  • Contact local hospitals and treatment centers. Some hospitals and treatment centers may offer rehab center payment plans or sliding scale fees for individuals without insurance. They may also be able to refer you to local community resources.

  • Utilize online resources. There are several online directories and databases that can help you locate addiction treatment resources near you, including the SAMHSA treatment locator.
How to Sign Up For Health Insurance?

Signing up for health insurance requires research and effort, but it can provide significant, often life-saving benefits, including access to affordable healthcare and protection from high medical costs. If you’re interested in signing up for health insurance coverage for rehab, there are several steps you can take:

  • Research your options: Begin by researching the different types of health insurance plans available, including employer-sponsored plans, marketplace plans, and government assistance for rehab through Medicaid or Medicare. Then, consider your healthcare needs and budget when choosing a plan.
  • Check for enrollment periods: Different health insurance enrollment periods apply depending on the kind of plan. Check with your employer for enrollment details if you’re signing up for an employer-sponsored plan. Open enrollment for marketplace plans usually happens once a year, but there are special enrollment windows for circumstances like leaving your job or getting married.
  • Gather your information: You must gather some information before signing up for a health insurance plan, such as your Social Security number, financial data, and any medical history that may impact your coverage.
  • Enroll in a plan: Depending on the plan you’re enrolling in, you may be able to enroll online, by phone, or in person. Follow the instructions provided by the insurance company or marketplace to complete your enrollment.
  • Make payments: You must continue to pay your premiums after enrolling in a health insurance plan to maintain your coverage. Be sure to note the payment due dates and send them in on time.
Does Health Insurance Cover Pre-Existing Conditions?

Under the Affordable Care Act (ACA), health insurance companies are required to cover pre-existing conditions.7 This means that if you have a health condition before signing up for health insurance, health insurance companies can’t deny you coverage or charge higher premiums based on that condition.

In addition, the ACA also prohibits insurance companies from placing lifetime limits on coverage for essential health benefits, such as hospitalizations or prescription drugs, which can be especially important for individuals with pre-existing conditions.

However, some health insurance plans may have waiting periods before coverage for pre-existing conditions begins. This means that you may need to wait a certain amount of time before your insurance covers treatment for your pre-existing condition. Furthermore, some short-term or limited-duration health insurance plans may not cover pre-existing conditions, so it’s important to carefully verify insurance benefits of any plan before enrolling.

I hit a rough patch heading into the holidays and relapsed, so I went back to Virtue for help. I had gone to the facility in Vegas a while back, but for insurance reasons I had to go to Killeen. Yes! Virtue is that good of a facility it’s worth traveling to, Killeen provided transportation to and from Austin airport. Really the only thing different between the two facilities was the location. Killeen is definitely a 5-star treatment center, very clean with beautiful room and comfortable beds. The staff was amazing from housekeeping to the director! Their program is great with a nice mix of classes and free time, with plenty of activities to do. The food is really good too, provided by in house executive chefs! Just another shoutout to the staff, very caring, genuine and loving what they do! I had forgotten a couple of things when I had packed, and a staff member went personally to the store and picked up what I needed. You cannot go wrong by picking Virtue for your treatment! oh… also ask about “Tyrone Bingo” it’s a wonderful night of entertainment!! Big hearted thank you to all the staff, you’re all a blessing!! followed with the “Serenity Prayer.”

Virtue is a special place. As soon as you arrive you are accepted as if you are family. The staff is beyond amazing. They are the definition of ride or die. They will go to the ends of the earth to make sure you have everything you need to be successful on your road to recovery. If you want a better life call them now, check in, and wait it out, because patience is a Virtue!!!!!!!

I cannot say enough good things about Virtue. This place helped me completely turn my life around. The staff are an amazing group of people who are what really makes this recovery center what it is. The compassion and real love they share with each and everyone who comes through the door on their road to recovery is astounding. If I listed off all the names of the staff who actually care wholeheartedly about each individual I would need a copy of the payroll list they are all so amazing. Thank you all so much for everything.
