Do Outpatient Rehab Centers Take Insurance?

If you’re wondering, “Does health insurance cover outpatient rehab,” substance use disorder services are one of the ten essential health benefits listed in the Affordable Care Act (ACA). So naturally, most insurance companies must cover some type of addiction treatment. Let’s get into the specifics.

We Work With Most Insurances

What is Outpatient Treatment?

Outpatient treatment is a healthcare service where patients receive medical or mental health treatment outside a hospital or residential facility. It can include outpatient services, such as medical consultations, diagnostic procedures, detoxification, counseling, and medication management. This same-day treatment allows patients to receive care part-time, typically during daytime hours, and return home afterward.

Outpatient rehab is often used for less severe conditions that don’t require 24-hour monitoring or hospitalization. In addition, treatment at an outpatient clinic is usually more affordable and less disruptive to a patient’s daily life than inpatient treatment, which requires staying at a hospital or residential facility for an extended period. However, it may not be appropriate for everyone, particularly those with severe or life-threatening conditions that require close monitoring and emergency care.

  • The proportion of persons 18 and older who received outpatient mental health care went from 7.4% in 2002 (or 15.5 million people) to 8.3% in 2019 (or 20.6 million people).
  • Outpatient care is provided by about 82% of all substance abuse treatment centers.2
  • The National Survey of Substance Abuse Treatment Services (N-SSATS) found that in 2019, the most commonly reported substance abuse primary treatment focus for outpatient facilities was alcohol abuse (67%), followed by drug abuse (49%).3
  • The most commonly used types of therapy in outpatient substance use disorder treatment included cognitive behavioral therapy (72%), individual counseling (63%), and group counseling (62%).
  • According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), drug use costs the US upwards of $600 billion annually. The economic burden would significantly decrease if everyone suffering from substance abuse committed to some degree of care, whether in an outpatient program or otherwise.4
  • A study published in the Journal of Substance Abuse Treatment in 2019 found that people who received outpatient substance use disorder treatment had lower hospitalization rates, emergency department visits, and healthcare costs than those who received inpatient treatment.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Does Insurance Cover Outpatient Rehab?

Many insurance plans cover outpatient rehab for substance abuse and addiction, as well as for other types of conditions that require rehabilitation treatment. The exact coverage and benefits will depend on the specific insurance policy, among other factors. We can verify your outpatient insurance coverage for you – just call 866-461-3339.

The specifics of outpatient rehab insurance coverage and premiums can vary widely. However, insurance plans generally cover outpatient rehab as it is considered a cost-effective and less intensive alternative to inpatient rehab.

Outpatient rehab can include individual and group therapy, medication management, and other types of counseling and support. Some insurance plans may also cover partial hospitalization programs (PHP), which provide intensive outpatient treatment.

Keep in mind some insurance plans may have limitations on the number of visits or amount of coverage for outpatient rehab. Additionally, insurance plans may require pre-authorization for outpatient rehab treatment or that you meet a deductible before coverage kicks in. They may also only cover medically necessary treatment.

What is Rehab Insurance Coverage?

Rehab insurance is a type of health insurance that pays for the costs of rehabilitation services for those battling substance abuse or addiction and those healing from mental health illnesses or injuries. Private insurance policies, public health insurance programs like Medicaid or Medicare, or employer-sponsored health insurance plans can all offer coverage for rehabilitation.

The insured’s policy will determine the scope of rehab insurance coverage. For example, rehab insurance often covers detoxification, inpatient or outpatient therapy, counseling, and medication management. Some insurance policies may also cover alternative or complementary therapies like acupuncture or yoga.

How Much Does Outpatient Rehab Cost With Insurance?

The average cost of outpatient rehab for a three-month program is $5,000.1 However, this cost can vary significantly depending on several factors, including the specific insurance plan, policy, and treatment type. To learn more about the cost of outpatient addiction rehab with or without insurance, call us at 866-461-3339.

How Many Times Will Insurance Pay For Outpatient Rehab?

The number of times that insurance will cover outpatient rehab depends on your specific insurance plan, among other factors. For example, insurance plans generally cover outpatient rehab treatment deemed medically necessary, but there may be limitations or exclusions on the amount and duration of coverage.

For example, some insurance plans may limit the number of visits or the duration of outpatient rehab treatment. In contrast, others may have more flexible coverage depending on your particular needs. Some policies may also have annual or lifetime caps on the amount of outpatient insurance coverage.

If you are unsure how often your policy will pay for outpatient rehab treatment, contact Virtue Recovery Center at 866-461-3339. We can provide details about your specific policy and any applicable limitations or restrictions.

Can You Go To Outpatient Rehab Without Insurance?

Yes, you can receive outpatient rehabilitation without health insurance. Don’t let the lack of health insurance prevent you from getting the care you need. If you seek outpatient rehab treatment without insurance, options are available to help offset the cost, including access to various state-funded and free therapy programs.

If you wish to attend an outpatient facility for rehabilitation services but lack health insurance, look into local possibilities and ask treatment providers about payment plans or other forms of financial aid. In addition, if any government or local community groups in your area promote addiction treatment, try contacting them to learn more about other options that could be accessible to you.

The Alumni program is beyond anything I have ever seen, offering support and encouragement after discharge for as long as needed. The facilities are beautiful, welcoming, and well maintained. The rooms are spacious and comfortable. The housekeeping staff is exceptional, and the food is incredible! Come take a tour and see for yourself. I would not send my loved ones anywhere else.

Virtue is one of the nicest, newest, and cleanest facilities I’ve ever been at. It’s not beaten up and chaotic like all other places I’ve been to! It has a good energy, and positive vibe feeling of peace and serenity. Staff is kind too! It has been a breath of fresh air! Perfect for starting your brand new life!

I can honestly say that this place helped me with my SUD and changed my way of thinking. The staff are all so open and friendly and someone is always there to lend an ear or a helping hand. I’ve been to a few rehabs and they have been nothing compared to Virtue in how they were run, the therapy and therapists, and the fact that the staff all love their jobs and truly do care for you. If you need help, or someone you love needs help, then don’t waste time or money trying anywhere else.

I cannot say enough positive things about this place. I came in as a first-timer to a residential facility and brought along with me a multitude of mental health struggles and addictions that had had a handle on my life for a long time.

• The staff is beyond amazing and genuinely invested in the wellbeing of the clients.
• My therapist was by far the best I have ever seen and so easy to talk to; I left with a better understanding of myself than I’ve had in my entire life.
• My case manager was insanely kind and went above and beyond for me.

I hit a rough patch heading into the holidays and relapsed, so I went back to Virtue for help. I had gone to the facility in Vegas a while back, but for insurance reasons I had to go to Killeen. Yes! Virtue is that good of a facility it’s worth traveling to, Killeen provided transportation to and from Austin airport. Really the only thing different between the two facilities was the location. Killeen is definitely a 5-star treatment center, very clean with beautiful room and comfortable beds. The staff was amazing from housekeeping to the director! Their program is great with a nice mix of classes and free time, with plenty of activities to do. The food is really good too, provided by in house executive chefs! Just another shoutout to the staff, very caring, genuine and loving what they do! I had forgotten a couple of things when I had packed, and a staff member went personally to the store and picked up what I needed. You cannot go wrong by picking Virtue for your treatment! oh… also ask about “Tyrone Bingo” it’s a wonderful night of entertainment!! Big hearted thank you to all the staff, you’re all a blessing!! followed with the “Serenity Prayer.”

Virtue is a special place. As soon as you arrive you are accepted as if you are family. The staff is beyond amazing. They are the definition of ride or die. They will go to the ends of the earth to make sure you have everything you need to be successful on your road to recovery. If you want a better life call them now, check in, and wait it out, because patience is a Virtue!!!!!!!

I cannot say enough good things about Virtue. This place helped me completely turn my life around. The staff are an amazing group of people who are what really makes this recovery center what it is. The compassion and real love they share with each and everyone who comes through the door on their road to recovery is astounding. If I listed off all the names of the staff who actually care wholeheartedly about each individual I would need a copy of the payroll list they are all so amazing. Thank you all so much for everything.
